Doesburg, a beautiful ancient town on the river IJssel, received city rights in the year 1237. It has currently nearly 12,000 inhabitants. Because of its strategic position along the rivers the Oude IJssel and Gelderse IJssel, Doesburg has been an important fortified city for a long time. The fortification of the city made Doesburg an important economic and administrative city. Until this very day one can see where the moats around the city were. The Martinikerk, the main church in Doesburg is 94 meters tall. The architecture in the historical center of Doesburg is an exquisite example of the art and outstanding quality of construction in the Middle Ages and until the 20th century.
